We must also know that there were (and are) no Golden Ages of history. The evidences of decay all around us do not mean that there was any ideal period at any time during the Modern Age. In certain fields of life and art and thought: perhaps. In others: certainly not. Yes, it would be pleasant to meet Rembrandt or Bach or Montesquieu or Washington — or perhaps even to live in the age of Edward VII: but only with plenty of money at our disposal, and in at least near-perfect health… These personalities and beautiful memories were but mere masks among pain, uneasiness, disease and rather unexpressed yet definitely more common disappointments of that time.
